The ESC has built a thriving cardio-oncology community through its Council, guidelines, conferences and educational activities. Taking this to the next level, the new European Heart Journal – Cardio-Oncology (EHJ – Cardio-Oncology) provides a scientific platform to sustain and amplify that momentum.
EHJ – Cardio-Oncology was launched at the second ESC Cardio-Oncology conference in June 2026 and will soon publish its first issue. Editor-in-Chief of the new ESC journal, Professor Tom Marwick, explains why the journal is set to occupy an important space: “Cardiovascular disease and cancer are two major causes of death, and yet we don’t have many journals focused on the interface between the two,” he says. “By bringing these together, EHJ – Cardio-Oncology is the missing piece of the puzzle, providing an authoritative home to share high-quality research across the spectrum of cardio-oncology, from prevention and treatment to survivorship and long-term cardiovascular risk.” He sees a major role for the publication to be translating knowledge into practice at scale. “As the field grows in maturity, we need to build better evidence that can inform guidelines and impact patient care − and we need a dedicated space to bring it to a global readership,” he notes.
Just as a multidisciplinary approach is crucial in cardio-oncology, so the new journal will serve a diverse community including cardiologists from across subspecialties, oncologists, haematologists, radiation oncologists, specialist nurses, pharmacists, basic scientists and also specialists in areas such as bioinformatics.
Doctor Mariana Mirabel, Chair of the Cardio-Onco of tomorrow Leaders (COOL) group, is thrilled to welcome the new journal: “EHJ – Cardio-Oncology is a great opportunity to disseminate advances in this new and rapidly changing transversal field in cardiology. A dedicated ESC journal will not only stimulate original research in the field but also fulfil the educational needs of our young and growing community with clinical cases and expert opinion,” she says.
EHJ – Cardio-Oncology is accepting submissions now! Prof. Marwick and the Editorial Board are keen to receive papers from anyone interested in advancing patient care in cardio-oncology, whatever their speciality or role. He notes that the journal aims for swift response times to ensure important developments are communicated without delay and that the much-needed evidence base grows as quickly as possible. “We’ve already had some very high-quality papers which I take as an index of pent-up demand in this field,” he concludes.

The growing ESC Journal Family
EHJ – Cardio-Oncology is not the only publishing development. In 2027, European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Interventions, the official journal of the ESC’s European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), will be launched, ensuring that the ESC Journal Family spans the full breadth of cardiology subspecialties.
