2026 ESC Guidelines for the management of cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease
This is the first ESC guideline dedicated to the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The guideline’s central focus uses the phrase “STAMP on CKD”. The STAMP acronym refers to Screen, Triage, and Address CKD Risk, Modify CVD management, and Plan health services. The first three letters encourage active engagement in identifying CKD and initiation of cost-effective interventions to manage CKD by all clinicians, including the cardiology community. Such an approach is required to reduce the global burden of CVD and CKD. This is because there are strong associations between CKD and many different CVDs, including acute and chronic coronary syndromes, heart failure (HF), arrhythmias, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, and sudden cardiac death. The letter M in STAMP encompasses all these conditions. The guidelines emphasizes where the presence of CKD necessitates changes in standard approaches and/or additional measures. Lastly, the guideline provide recommendations to ensure there are no delays in cardiological treatment of patients with CKD, despite their extra complexity.
