Statins and survival free of incident frailty among older US veterans

European Heart Journal

Frailty and cardiovascular disease share inflammatory pathways, yet no drug strategy is established to prevent frailty.

In this large retrospective study of 987,301 statin-naïve, non-frail US veterans aged ≥67 years, new statin initiation was associated with a lower risk of incident frailty over 5.3 years after propensity weighting (HR 0.76, 95% CI 0.75–0.76), with similar findings in pre-frail veterans.

These data may prompt cardiologists to view statins not only as lipid-lowering therapy, but also as a potential tool to support healthy ageing.
