When and where is the Cardiovascular Health Check? 

Get your free health check in the ICM Zone, next to the Registration Area. You can book your spot one week before the congress. 

  • Friday, 28 August: 09:00–17:00 
  • Saturday, 29 August: 09:00–17:00 
  • Sunday, 30 August: 09:00–17:00 
  • Monday, 31 August: 09:00–16:00 

What is the Cardiovascular Health Check? 

This free health check offers ESC Congress delegates the opportunity to undergo a cardiovascular health assessment. In 15 minutes, you can learn more about key cardiovascular risk factors, better understand your own CV health and contribute to raising awareness of the importance of prevention and early detection.

About the tests 

First, your blood pressure and waist circumference will be measured. To ensure an accurate measurement, you will need to rest for about 10 minutes in the waiting area before the test. 

  • Blood pressure: One of the most important modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, strongly associated with heart attack, stroke, and heart failure  
  • Waist circumference: Assesses abdominal obesity, which is associated with increased cardiometabolic and cardiovascular risk  

Then,  a blood draw by capillary test (finger prick) will be performed to test the following parameters: 

  • Lipids profile: Levels of cholesterol and triglyceride to assess atherosclerotic risk  
  • Lp(a): An inherited cholesterol particle associated with increased risk of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, independent of traditional risk factors  
  • HbA1c: Reflects average blood glucose levels over the previous 2–3 months and helps identify diabetes or prediabetes, major cardiovascular risk factors 
  • High Sensitivity Troponin I: may identify individuals at higher risk of future cardiovascular events  
  • High Sensititivity C-Reactive Protein: Measures low-grade systemic inflammation, a key contributor to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk.  
  • NT-proBNP: A marker of cardiac stress that can help identify individuals at increased risk of heart failure and cardiovascular events 
  • Serum creatinine (eGRF calculation): indicator of kidney health 

Finally, you will be provided with a urine sample kit so albumin-creatine ratio (ACR) can be analysed. ACR, with eGRF are key indicators of kidney health – Kidney disfunction being closely linked to increased cardiovascular risk  

All tests will be compliant with testing standards and follow strict hygiene protocols. 

Results 

Your results will be available within a week via a secure platform.

Why do we want CV health checks for all? 

CVD is the world’s number one killer, so it seems inconceivable that very few countries have a plan in place to tackle it. We know that many cardiovascular diseases are preventable. 

Evidence shows that screening: 

  • leads to early detection, diagnosis and prevention 
  • helps clinicians support patients more effectively in adopting a proactive approach to their heart health  

That is why the ESC is calling for policymakers everywhere to develop national cardiovascular health plans and make cardiovascular health checks part of them.
