2026-2027 Scientific Exchange Grant

Principle

The objective of the WG CCE Scientific Exchange Grant (SEG) is to strengthen collaboration between research institutions across different European countries. To support this objective, up to two grants of  €2,500 each will be awarded to members of the Working Group on Cardiac Cellular Electrophysiology (WG CCE) to help cover travel and accommodation expenses incurred during a research visit of at least one month at an institution in another European Country.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the WG CCE Scientific Exchange Grant (SEG), applicants need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be an early-career investigator in the field of cellular cardiac electrophysiology, including PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Not have previously received a WG CCE Scientific Exchange Grant (SEG).
  • Undertake the exchange in a host laboratory located in a different European country from their current laboratory.
  • Both your current institution and host institution are located in ESC Member Countries.
  • Be a current member of the Working Group on Cardiac Cellular Electrophysiology (WG CCE) at the time of application.

Timeline

  • Monday, 7 September 2026: Opening of online applications
  • Thursday, 7 January 2027 (23:59 CET): Deadline for online applications
  • By Monday, 18 January 2027: Start of the review process  
  • Thursday, 25 February 2027: Review deadline
  • March 2027: Announcement of results
  • By April 2027: Grant recipients are expected to confirm acceptance of their grant
  • Within 12 months following acceptance: The scientific exchange should take place

 

Application process

Complete the online application form between Monday, 7 September 2026 and Thursday, 7 January 2027 via the  "Applications" section of your My ESC Account or directly in the grants application area.

As part of your application form, you will be asked to provide the following information:

  • Details of your current research in the field of cardiac electrophysiology (300 words).
  • Description of your proposed project (300 words).
  • A statement on how you intend to use the SEG (300 words).
  • Confirmation that,  if the SEG is not used within 12 months of the award date, it will be considered delined and no payment will be made.
Please upload a single PDF containing:
  • A one-page curriculum vitae and a list of publications.
  • A letter of support from the host institution.
  • A letter of support from the current institution.

Important

  • Only applications submitted in English will be accepted.
  • Applications submitted by email or postal mail will not be considered.

Review process

The review process will be coordinated by a panel composed of two members of the WG CCE Nucleus and two external reviewers selected by these Nucleus members. The panel will assess both the elligibility of the applicant and the suitability of the proposed host institution. To avoid any conflict of interest, individuals involved in a submitted application, whether as the applicant's supervisor or as a representative of the proposed host institution, will not participate in the review process.

Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Quality of the application.
  • Scientific value of the proposed visit and its relevance to the applicant's future research career.
  • Quality and suitability of the host laboratory.
  • Contribution of the proposed project to the objectives of the Working group.

Based on the evaluation results, the WG Chairperson-Elect will propose the candidate(s) to receive the grant(s). The proposal will be discussed at the next WG CCE Nucleus meeting, during which the final decision will be made. 

Grant recipients are expected to undertake the scientific exchange within 12 months of the official award date. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of the grant and the recipient will not be eligible to apply for future Scientific Exchange Grants.

Payment of the Scientific Exchange Grant

The first payment, corresponding to 60% of the Scientific Exchange Grant (SEG), will be made prior to the visit to the Host institution upon receipt of:

  • a confirmation letter from the host institution, including the dates of the exchange;

and

  • accommodation / travel receipt

The remaining 40% will be paid upon receipt of a final report (1-2 pages) signed by the director of the Host institution.

Once the final report has been reviewed and validated by the WG Chairperson, it will be published on this page.
