This month we're discussing an interesting manuscript published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology about nutrition and peripheral vascular disease.
The work is an excellent narrative review that highlights the current evidence linking a healthy diet and adequate nutrition to the prevention and management of peripheral vascular disease across its entire clinical spectrum, emphasising its importance and necessity beyond pharmacological treatment and revascularisation, the current cornerstones. The available evidence shows that a healthy diet can reduce the risk of peripheral vascular disease and improves its prognosis. On the other hand, undernutrition is independently associated with complications and a worse postoperative outcome.
As the authors state, despite being this a fundamental pillar for both prevention and treatment, many patients still do not receive dietary advice, and few studies have been conducted in this area.
Beyond medical treatment and revascularisation, lifestyle modifications remain a cornerstone in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The importance of abstaining from must be always emphasised. The manuscript has a graphical abstract that summarises it perfectly .
Congratulations to the authors.
