Travel to Lisbon by car

Depending on the direction you are coming from, you can resort to several motorways and national and European roads.

People coming from the South can take the A 2 Motorway, whereas the A 6 Motorway is recommendable for people coming from the East. Drivers who turn to these alternatives must be aware that they must also cross the 25 Abril Bridge to eventually reach Lisbon.

The A2 Motorway is the best solution for people coming from the North.

The A 5 Motorway is advisable for visitors who travel from the West. Most of the motorways which connect Lisbon with the rest of the country are linked to at least one of the three ring roads of the capital.

From Lisbon Airport, the drive takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Public transport in Lisbon is reliable and good value. The transport network includes Carris (buses, trams, funiculars and lifts) and the Metro. Possibly the cheapest way to get around is to buy a ‘Via Viagem’ or ‘7Colinas’ prepaid card, available from Metro ticket offices. This is a top up card similar to London’s Oyster Card. There is an initial cost of 0.50 cents, plus a top up of 2, 5 or 10 Euros. It can be used on Lisbon buses, trams, ferryboats and the Metro. Each trip currently costs €1.45 when using the card.

Taxi

Taxis in Lisbon are beige; journey prices start with a standard price of around 2 Euros, and are metered from then on. Taxis will cost roughly 10 Euros to make any trip within the city to the centre. Drivers are also allowed to charge up to 50% for extra luggage, depending on the luggage weight.
