Is there a recognised cardio-oncology group or society in your country?
A dedicated Cardio-Oncology Group has been established in Tunisia under the auspices of the Tunisian Society of Cardiology. The group supports the development of cardio-oncology activities nationwide and promotes collaboration between cardiologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with cancer.
Clinical Practice
Cardio-oncology services are currently provided through three referral centres: the Military Hospital of Tunis, Ariana Hospital, and Sfax Hospital. These dedicated units offer specialised assessment and management of cardiovascular complications associated with cancer therapies. While structured cardio-oncology services are available, there are currently no national cardiotoxicity registries.
Education
The Tunisian Cardio-Oncology Group has developed several educational initiatives to promote awareness and expertise in the field. These include three multidisciplinary meetings dedicated to the discussion of complex cardio-oncology cases, as well as dedicated cardio-oncology sessions during the National Cardiology Congress.
Additional educational activities have included a masterclass at the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis and a complementary certification programme in cardio-oncology. Furthermore, the Tunisian Society of Cardiology has established a dedicated “Case of the Month in Cardio-Oncology” section on its website, providing regular educational content and clinical case discussions for healthcare professionals.
Research
Research activities in cardio-oncology are actively developing. An ongoing study is currently evaluating the cardioprotective effects of empagliflozin in patients scheduled to receive anthracycline-based cancer therapy. The study aims to contribute to the growing body of evidence on strategies to prevent cancer therapy-related cardiovascular complications.
