Is there a recognised cardio-oncology group or society in your country?
The Cardio-Oncology Section of the Cardiology Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina represents the first organised national initiative dedicated to the cardiovascular care of patients with cancer. As cardio-oncology remains an emerging field within the country, the Section aims to establish the foundations of a sustainable multidisciplinary programme aligned with the recommendations of the ESC Council of Cardio-Oncology. Its activities focus on promoting education, standardisation of care, and research development.
Clinical Practice
Cardio-oncology services in Bosnia and Herzegovina are still in an early stage of development. At present, there are no dedicated cardio-oncology clinics, formal multidisciplinary teams, or structured referral networks for patients requiring specialised cardiovascular care during or after cancer treatment.
The establishment of coordinated clinical pathways and multidisciplinary collaboration represents a key priority for future development. Current efforts are focused on creating the organisational framework necessary to support the delivery of specialised cardio-oncology services nationwide.
Education
Educational activities in cardio-oncology are currently limited, and there are no dedicated national courses, webinars, congress sessions, or structured training programmes in the field.
One of the primary objectives of the Cardio-Oncology Section is to strengthen educational opportunities for healthcare professionals and increase awareness of cardiovascular complications associated with cancer therapies. Future initiatives are expected to focus on professional training, dissemination of best practices, and the development of multidisciplinary expertise in cardio-oncology.
Research
Research development represents a major strategic priority for the Cardio-Oncology Section of the Cardiology Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Section is working to establish the foundations of a national multidisciplinary programme that will support data collection, scientific collaboration, and evidence-based clinical practice.
A central component of the 2026 work plan is the creation of a national registry of oncology patients undergoing cardiology surveillance. The registry is intended to provide the first structured national dataset in cardio-oncology and support future clinical and research initiatives.
The initial phase of the project focuses on establishing the multidisciplinary team, developing the registry infrastructure, standardising data collection procedures, and defining collaboration with major oncology centres. Subsequent phases include engagement with participating centres, implementation of data entry, and educational activities for healthcare professionals involved in the project.
Later stages of the programme will focus on preliminary data analysis, evaluation of data quality and system performance, refinement of clinical protocols, and preparation of scientific reports and publications. The long-term objective is to support the growth of cardio-oncology research, expand educational activities, and foster international collaboration, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of cardio-oncology in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
