Dear Members and Friends,
Welcome to this edition of the Working Group Thrombosis newsletter.
I am delighted to share with you two important new Consensus Documents from the Working Group on Thrombosis, which have been recently published. Firstly, we have:
- Management of patients with congenital bleeding disorders and cardiac indications for antithrombotic therapy: A clinical consensus statement of the ESC Working Group on Thrombosis, the Association for Acute CardioVascular Care (ACVC), European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) of the ESC, the ESC Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy and the European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders (EAHAD) Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Pharmacother. 2025 May 2;11(3):275-289. doi: 10.1093/ehjcvp/pvaf006. PMID: 40145128; PMCID: PMC12046583.)
With the advent of effective coagulant therapies, the life expectancy of patients with haemophilia and other severe congenital bleeding disorders has significantly increased. This document offers advice and guidance on the approach to antithrombotic therapy when such patients develop pro-thrombotic conditions like AF and ACS.
Secondly, hot off the press, a collaboration of the Working Group on Thrombosis with the EAPCI, and published just last month:
- Antithrombotic drugs for acute coronary syndromes in women: sex-adjusted treatment and female representation in randomised clinical trials. A clinical consensus statement of the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) and the ESC Working Group on Thrombosis. Eur Heart J. 2025 May 20:ehaf352. doi: 10.1093/eurheartj/ehaf352. Epub ahead of print. PMID: 40390370.
Thrombotic and bleeding risks differ between men and women, partly due to hormonal status, but also due to differences in age, comorbidities and body size at presentation. This paper provides expert consensus to optimise antithrombotic strategies according to sex, to reduce thrombotic and bleeding risk.
Please do not forget to make space in your diaries for the next meeting of our Working Group on Thrombosis, the ESC Heart & Stroke and EuroThrombosis 2025, which will be a joint meeting between our group and the ESC Council on Stroke. The conference will take place in Milan, from 15 to 16 November 2025.
Please also submit your research and interesting clinical case reports to us – our portal is now live for submission. There will be prizes for the best clinical and research abstracts, as well as best clinical case presentations.
