Irregular atrial arrhythmias shorter than 30 s and the risk of atrial fibrillation on continuous monitoring
EP Europace
How should clinicians respond to brief atrial arrhythmia episodes detected on ambulatory monitoring? These short episodes are frequently seen in practice; however, they do not meet ESC guideline criteria for diagnosing atrial fibrillation and therefore do not automatically justify anticoagulation.
The authors aimed to determine whether such brief arrhythmias progress to clinically significant atrial fibrillation in a large cohort of more than 20,000 individuals referred for ambulatory monitoring.
