What We Do

Leading the fight against cardiovascular disease

Building the future of heart health, together

Driven by our mission to improve patient outcomes

Welcome to the European Society of Cardiology. We are a leading authority in the fight against cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death globally.

We connect cardiovascular health professionals around the world to disseminate the latest knowledge, innovations and guidelines. As a community, we work together to empower healthcare providers to transform cardiovascular care from a privilege to a universal right.

Global platforms, global impact

Sharing the latest cardiovascular science

Medical knowledge grows exponentially. We peer review and disseminate the latest science and clinical practice to the global cardiology community, driving cardiovascular education and excellence worldwide.

At the heart of our knowledge sharing is the ESC Journal Family - our world-class, peer-reviewed publications, that provide trustworthy content across all cardiology topics, including emerging themes with significant public health impact.

Our congresses are recognised for their global reach and cutting-edge scientific programmes, which influence clinical practice and patient care. Our award-winning flagship event, ESC Congress, is the largest and most influential cardiovascular assembly in the world. We also organise multiple congresses across the main subspecialty areas, providing pivotal opportunities for healthcare professionals to stay up to date on the latest science while networking with peers and experts from across the globe.

Guidance shaping global care

ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines are the cornerstone of our work

As the recognised authority and standard for cardiology practice, ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines are the cornerstone of our work, helping to shape care around the world.

ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines are used by millions of healthcare professionals globally to support clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes. They provide an indispensable framework that enables clinicians to determine when and how to apply the latest science, which we publish and showcase at congresses. Our guidelines are endorsed, translated and disseminated by our member National Cardiac Societies.

Leading with excellence

We strive for excellence to ensure patients worldwide receive the best possible care

We help cardiovascular healthcare professionals stay ahead in their specialty and up to date on all cardiology topics.

At the heart of our education programme is the ESC Core Curricula, which sets the standards and provides the framework for training and lifelong learning in general cardiology and its subspecialties.

From trainee to post-graduate diplomas, we provide expert-led learning. Our educational offer reinforces ESC Guidelines best practice and is independent and accredited by the Union of European Medical Specialists (UEMS).

To enhance best practice and offer proof of professional excellence, we offer cardiology practitioners a range of gold-standard certifications. Central to this is the European Exam in Core Cardiology – co-organised with the UEMS-Cardiology Section and National Cardiac Societies.

Measuring impact

Real-world and public health data

Our data science and research activity enables us to turn information into insights, action and impact at every level of our activity. It is the foundation for how we improve science, clinical care, education and policy.

We collect real-world data through a network of patient centres on a scale that is second to none. We use this data to create practical tools, measure adherence to ESC Guidelines and better understand patient outcomes and gaps in implementation.

This feedback highlights barriers, identifies unmet needs and reveals areas where recommendations may require updating. The process begins again as new research and feedback are incorporated into future guidelines, ensuring continuous improvement.
