The Storm PE study is important because, despite more than a decade of endovascular therapy and multiple approved devices, robust randomized evidence comparing catheter-based treatment with anticoagulation alone in pulmonary embolism has been limited. In the STORM PE trial, 100 patients were randomized to catheter-assisted vacuum thrombectomy plus anticoagulation versus anticoagulation alone, with the primary outcome being the change in RV/LV ratio at 48 hours. The thrombectomy group demonstrated a significantly greater reduction and more frequent normalization of RV/LV ratio, without an increase in major adverse events. These findings support the use of catheter-directed thrombectomy combined with anticoagulation in intermediate- to high-risk PE and underscore the need for larger trials to evaluate long-term and mortality outcomes.
