ESC Working Group on e-Cardiology

Dear members of the ESC Working Group on e-Cardiology,

How much has the world changed since the publication of our last newsletter? How much more have we become dependent on digital ways of communication? How will our personal and our families’ social and professional situations change in the time to come? Those are just a few of the many questions that arise when writing this newsletter. I sincerely hope that you and your families are all in good health.

As someone with a non-vital job (yes, it’s confronting, but very true), I can’t find the words to express my gratitude to the ones risking their lives to deliver care and to keep the healthcare systems alive. A big THANK YOU on behalf of our community! Stay strong and connected!

Importantly, I wish to bring the upcoming elections for ordinary Nucleus Member positions to your attention. You will receive an email with the call for candidates by the end of April, so keep an eye on our ESC Working Groups communication. We would like to encourage you all to consider and prepare your candidacy. Do not miss out on this chance to become a nucleus member and to help building the digital future of cardiology and its society!

The situation of social distancing is heavily affecting ESC events and conferences. As a community, we have the shared responsibility and duty to exchange knowledge, research findings and technologies. As a tech-minded community, I think we can and we should be the first ones to learn from and adapt to the current unprecedented situation.

As an example, Computing in Cardiology 2020 (13-16 September, Rimini, Italy) is preparing for possible online conferencing. We kindly remind you of the opportunity to submit a 4-pages paper for the ESC-CinC Clinical Needs Translational Award (see award details here), deadline extended to May 1.

Let’s stay open-minded and explore new ways of doing cardiovascular research, collaborating, as well as delivering and organizing healthcare. Let’s advocate the development and proper use of digital technologies in all fields for cardiology care, research, and education even more than we ever did.

On behalf of the entire WG Nucleus I wish you all the best, good health, and wisdom,

Joost Lumens, PhD, FESC

Chairperson ESC WG on e-Cardiology 2018-2020
