The EAPCI Women Committee
This initiative is helping to raise awareness about the shortage of women in interventional cardiology. Only about 10% of interventional cardiologists are women. The reasons for this are varied, however it is essential that women are encouraged, mentored and given the same opportunity to pursue a career in interventional cardiology as men. A further reason for the creation of the EAPCI Women Committee is to address the significant gender disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of female patients compared to men, and to ensure women are considered in all aspects of scientific literature, including clinical trials and guidelines.
The Committee is divided into a number of subdivisions (groups):
There is a Scientific Group which studies the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease in females and promotes studies focussing on gender outcomes. In addition, there’s a campaign to encourage the screening, diagnosis and treatment of women with cardiovascular disease.
There are Network and Web Communications groups that aim to develop and promote the Committee.
The Career Orientation Group works to encourage interventional cardiology as a feasible career option for women and assists in creating national symposiums.
Finally, the Challenging Countries Group helps to improve conditions of women as a patient and as a professional in challenging countries, nowadays centred in Bangladesh and Egypt.
Anyone who is a member of the EAPCI, man or woman, who has an interest in gender related issues can join this pioneering community and help to contribute to the changing face of interventional cardiology.
