ESC Working Group on Thrombosis

Dear Members of the Working Group on Thrombosis,

It is with pleasure that I am writing to you from the new position of Communication Coordinator of the working group nucleus. This year we had to meet on-line since the ESC Congress 2020 was a digital experience, albeit a wonderful one for which we congratulate all organizers. We are indeed getting to grips with virtual meetings and while it makes meeting across borders relatively easy, we would have loved to see each other “live” and we look forward to the moment we can!
The nucleus meeting was chaired by Prof. Dirk Sibbing and Dr. Gemma Vilahur, respectively our past and current chairperson. We would first of all like to thank Prof. Sibbing for all his effort, but with Dr. Vilahur we surely have a wonderful new chairperson to follow in his footsteps. We are also happy to pronounce that Dr. Diana Gorog and Dr. Tobias Geisler will be filling the position of treasurer and secretary, respectively.
We are proud to announce that our membership has risen to 799 members in the last two years and our goal is to grow to 1,000 members by 2022. Your help in promoting the working group on thrombosis will be greatly appreciated which can be achieved through greater visibility at international meetings beyond invited lectures. So, keep sending us your input as to sessions topics and seminars. While it remains uncertain when we can meet again in person, we do aim to run the Educational Training programme on Antithrombotic Therapy in 2022, and to contribute to the ESC Summer Course in 2021 as well as the FCVB in 2022 in Amsterdam.

The Young Thrombosis Group researcher’s nucleolus will be represented by Rui Guerreiro (coordinator of the Young Thrombosis Group for the period 2020-2022) and he will be the representative of the WGT on the Young Community in the ESC Board (initiative: Prof. Stephan Achenbach).

On the YTG initiative, we are now selecting a paper of the month that is discussed both by the YTG and a senior WGT member. This month the paper is entitled: Endotheliopathy in COVID-19-associated coagulopathy: evidence from a single-centre, cross-sectional study, by Goshua et al, published recently in Lancet Hematology. The YTG is represented by Josip Borovac. You can read our commentaries on the website. If you have a “must-read” that you would like to put forward then please send them to the communication coordinator.

On behalf of the Working Group nucleus,

Gemma Vilahur, Chairperson 2020-2022
Heleen van Beusekom, Communication Coordinator 2020-2022
