ESC Working Group on Cardiovascular Surgery

Dear Members,

In the first newsletter in 2021 we want to present you three publications that are of special interest for the Cardiovascular Surgery Community.
The first one is the “2020 EACTS/ELSO/STS/AATS expert consensus on post-cardiotomy extracorporeal life support in adult patients”. This comprehensive document covers all aspects of postcardiotomy extracorporeal life support and is a valuable resource and guiding document for the treatment of patients with low cardiac output after cardiac surgery.

The second publication presents the two-year data from the ELEVATE Registry, an European and Middle East post-market registry on the Heart Mate 3 left ventricular assist device. This study presents a “real world population” of patients receiving the Heart Mate 2 LVAD.

The third publication we want to make you aware of are the 2020 ACC/AHA guidelines on the management of patients with valvular heart disease. In this new version of the ACC/AHA guidelines SAVR or TF TAVI is equally recommended already in patients of ≥65 years of age compared to the 2017 ECS guidelines that equally recommend SAVR or TF TAVI in patients ≥75 years of age.

On behalf of the Working Group nucleus,

Martin Czerny, Chairperson 2020-2022 and Roman Gottardi, Communication Coordinator 2020-2022
