This document, updated on 16 November 2021, provides practical information and advice to help clinicians diagnose and manage cardiovascular disease in patients with COVID-19.

Discover:

  • Part 1 presents a review of epidemiology, pathophysiology and diagnosis of COVID-19 and CV conditions in patients with COVID-19;
  • Part 2 covers care pathways, including triage, diagnosis, treatment (medical and interventions) and follow-up of patients with CVD in this scenario.

The two documents present several explicative figures, algorithms, and tables with key points for each individual aspect. The advice for patients was developed in collaboration with the ESC Patient Forum.

The ESC has launched a patient facing campaign to remind the public that the heart continues to be a priority throughout the pandemic: You can’t pause a heart.

Key messages:

  • If you think you are experiencing a heart attack, seek care without delay.
  • If you have a chronic heart condition, do not neglect your treatment and follow-up appointments.

Surveys: STEMI admissions during COVID-19

More than 3,100 healthcare practitioners involved in the treatment of STEMI patients in 141 countries completed an online survey from 16 to 26 April 2020. 

The European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) conducted a separate survey of interventional cardiologists from 1 to 15 April 2020. EAPCI paper
