Update from the ESC Working Group on Thrombosis
Dear Colleagues
Welcome to our Autumn Newsletter.
Following the highly successful ESC meeting in Paris, we now turn our attention to planning the next major event in the life of the Working Group on Thrombosis.
Please therefore save the date in your diaries for
EUROTHROMBOSIS AND EUROVESSEL 2020
22-24 October 2020
Lisbon, Portugal
This will be the next, bi-annual meeting of the ESC Working Group on Thrombosis, held, for the first time, jointly with the ESC Working Group on Aorta and Peripheral Vascular Disease.
This will be the highlight of our 2020 calendar.
The meeting will feature latest research, plenary sessions, advances, and guidelines, for clinicians and scientists working in the field of thrombosis and atherosclerosis.
We look forward to welcoming abstract submissions, and there will be a Young Investigator Award.
Please save the date and watch our landing page for more details to follow.
The Young Investigator Award in Thrombosis was held at the ESC Congress 2019 in Paris. The level of submitted research was incredibly high, and the following 4 outstanding candidates were selected to present their research:
- Miss Tamar de Vries: Estimating individual lifetime benefit and bleeding risk of adding rivaroxaban to aspirin for patients with stable cardiovascular disease: results from the COMPASS trial
- Dr. Dario Bongiovanni: The prothrombotic transcriptome of reticulated platelets
- Dr. Luca Liberale: Sirtuin 5 regulates arterial thrombosis by modulating endothelial plasminogen activator inhibitor-1
- Dr. Lina Guiomar Mendieta Badimon:Intravenous administration of IV-STATIN CARDIOSHIELD during myocardial infarction renders higher cardioprotection than oral atorvastatin given shortly after reperfusion: a translational CMR study
All the presentations were of a very high standard indeed and the overall winner who was awarded the YIA in Thrombosis 2020 was Dr. Lina Mendieta Badimon, from Barcelona, Spain. We congratulate her wholeheartedly on this outstanding achievement!

Update from the Young Community of the ESC Working Group on Thrombosis
News from the ESC Congress 2019
The Young Community members, led by Daniel Caldeira, were well represented at the ESC Congress this year and had success in presenting their work. For example, Dr Michela Giustozzi, a nucleolus member, won the moderated poster session on Venous Thromboembolism. She presented a post-hoc analysis of PREFER in VTE on ‘the impact of sex and risk factors for venous thromboembolism on the clinical course of first acute venous thromboembolism’ recognizing that women and men often differ in term of presentation, clinical course and prognosis in many unique ways. With her research, Dr Giustozzi hopes to highlight the need for further data in this field, as women are often under-represented in clinical trials and sex-related differences are not yet completely understood.
Report of the recent Nucleolus meeting
The ESC Congress also provided an opportunity for the nucleolus to meet and discuss the group’s plans for the next year. In order to enhance awareness of the group’s aims and activities, regular newsletters such as this are planned. We would be keen to feature news of any events, achievements or other material relevant to Young Community of the Working Group. Please email Dr Will Parker if you have anything you would like to contribute.
EUROTHROMBOSIS AND EUROVESSEL 2020
Looking forward to 2020, an undoubtable highlight will be the EUROTHROMBOSIS AND EUROVESSEL 2020 meeting that is being organised for October 22-24 in Lisbon, Portugal. This will be a conference jointly hosted by the ESC Working Groups on Thrombosis and Aorta & Peripheral Vascular Diseases. As well as dedicated Young Investigator sessions, we are hoping to arrange an evening networking event for the young members of both working groups. Put the meeting in your diary and look out for further details in future newsletters!
With very best wishes,
Dr Gemma Chiva Blanch and Dr Will Parker
