ESC Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases

Dear Members,

Research outcomes and scientific publications increasingly invite us to re-consider the pathogenetic mechanisms of the diseases we have been dealing with for years. A broad and holistic understanding of the genetic, inflammatory and environmental contribution in myocardial and pericardial diseases is being established. With interest, we are perusing in the recommended readings of this Newsletter an article offering new insight into the mechanisms of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy which may lead to therapeutic strategies, and examples of potentially causative treatments in cardiomyopathy, at least at the level of the protein and the metabolism, if not at a genetic level too.

Focusing on education, in the last few months, the WG for M&PD has successfully organised 2 well-attended webinars on the genetic and familial aspect of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and the clinical course and management of the same disease. Another webinar is planned for the 10th January 2022 with the aim to go deep into the imaging diagnostic techniques used to evaluate patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

Further activities to be announced soon.

On behalf of the Working Group nucleus,

Antonis Pantazis, Chairperson 2020-2022
