About the Chinese Society of Cardiology - History

The Chinese Society of Cardiology (CSC) was founded in August 1978 in Taiyuan. Besides Wu Yingkai, the President, and Tao Shouqi, Huang Yuan, Fang Qi and Shi Meixin as the Vice-Presidents, there were in total 59 committee members in China (except Taiwan). Since then, local branches of CSC have been founded in many provinces all over China.

After more than 30 years, CSC has become the most recognised cardiovascular association in China. The association has had eight different boards since its creation and each time the new board members implemented developments and improvements both scientifically and organisationally in order to keep the society up to date. The details of developments and improvements are as follows:

With the first board after the society was founded, the society focused mainly on the foundation of regional branches in the provinces of China, and a network was created in order to facilitate the regional cooperation. At that time, many scientific activities were held in the larger regional areas.  The first board of directors also launched the official journal of the society, the Chinese Journal of Cardiology, which has now become the most recognised cardiovascular publication in China.

The second board of directors was elected at the annual meeting in 1983, during which 122 professional papers were selected and presented. The editorial board of the Chinese Journal of Cardiology was also re-elected the same year. Many conferences were held, such as the National Conference of Hypertension in 1985, the National Conference of Coronary Heart Disease in 1986 and the National Conference of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment.

During the third and fourth boards the society saw the creation of four new scientific committees. In 1989 the society became a member of the World Hypertension League and the Chinese Hypertension League was formed the same year. The National Clinical Research of Acute Myocardial Infarction was also organised in 1989, with more than 500 participants and 10,000 clinical observations.  On the basis of this, the society published the book Clinical Hypertension, which won the award as the best national technology book. National development training courses in cardiovascular disease were held in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

The fifth board was composed of a total of 39 members and 9 youth committee members. Six additional scientific committees were formed and the society held the sixth national conference in Shanghai in 2000 with over 1500 participants. This conference provided a platform for the communication of the latest progress, also in the area of prevention in CV, facilitating the development of the diagnoses and treatment of cardiovascular disease in China. The society launched a large-scale survey on auricular fibrillation and heart failure, leading to the creation of five guidelines on unstable angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmic drugs, and diagnostic criteria in adult acute viral myocarditis.

The sixth and seventh board counted 41 board members and six additional new scientific committees were set up. The number of attendees at the seminars have since been over 1500. The CIT (China Interventional Therapeutics) congress eased the development of Chinese interventional cardiology and scientific communication and thus enlarged the society’s influence on the international scientific scene.

In June 2009 the National Conference of Cardiovascular Disease was held in Dalian and the current and eighth board was elected. 10 scientific committees were set during this conference.

Under the lead of the current board members, the society will focus on practical work and scientific activities. More professional papers will be organised for the annual meeting in order to develop more scientific communication. One of the major achievements has so far been the involvement in the WCC congress in Beijing which earned much attention and reflection in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, and proved to be an influential cardiology congress.

Publications

The Chinese Journal of Cardiology (ISSN 0253-3758 / CN 11-2148/R) is the official journal of the CSC and was first published in February 1973. The current editorial board is composed of renowned cardiovascular experts, including Dr. Gao RUNLIN as editor-in-chief. Target readers are doctors in cardiovascular disease prevention, medicine and scientific research and the journal occupies the biggest reader group and circulation of all professional cardiovascular journals in China. It has thus been recommended by many international organisations and included by MEDLINE, BIOSIS, AJ, VINITI, BA, TOXCENTER, CJFD, CBM and the Chinese Academic Journals comprehensive Citation Report. The Chinese Journal of Cardiology was changed from a quarterly to bimonthly journal in 1987.
