Iron deficiency is a frequent co-morbidity in patients with heart failure. Its occurrence is independent of the presence of anaemia, although the two conditions may co-exist, and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity in heart failure. It is important to improve education on the occurrence and appropriate diagnosis and management of iron deficiency and to highlight the inefficiency of oral iron supplementation.
