Focus on

Cancer and cardiovascular disease share many common risk factors, and could thus be co-prevalent in a significant number of patients. As a result, in cardiology practice, clinicians are often confronted with CVD patients who also suffer from cancer. However, how to implement secondary prevention programs in patients with CVD and cancer can be challenging, in particular when chemotherapy is offered. The aim of this webinar is to delve deeper into the impact of chemotherapy in patients with CVD (in particular on functional/exercise capacity) and how to implement secondary prevention programs (e.g. multidisciplinary cardiovascular rehabilitation).

Needs assessment and expected educational outcome

To address a gap in cardio-oncology knowledge from the perspective of rehabilitation. This webinar is related to the EPA Core Curriculum on how to manage a cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation programme for an oncology patient. It is part of the EAPC catalogue of online sessions  based on the EAPC Core Curriculum for Preventive Cardiology published in February 2021.

Learning objectives

After watching this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • understand major cardiotoxic cancer therapies;
  • understand the importance of structured prevention and rehabilitation programmes for cancer patients;
  • adjust lifestyle interventions (physical activity and exercise, nutrition, weight management, smoking cessation) to stages of cancer therapy; and
  • understand specific psychosocial needs of cancer patients.
