Ciao Maurizio, the ‘Gentle Giant’ of Cardiology, Echocardiography and Cardio-Oncology.

Together with the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, for whom you were the prestigious Vice President, with the Colleagues and Students of the Federico II University Hospital where you were the Professor of Internal Medicine, with all of your patients who received their care from you, at the Interdepartmental Laboratory of Standard and Advanced Echocardiography of the School of Medicine at Naples University, Italy, and all your friends of the Council of Cardio-Oncology, we all would still like to say ‘Good Bye’ and share a big hug with you.

You published over 400 peer-reviewed scientific articles, many in the field of Cardio-Oncology. We know that you were not only an outstanding echocardiography expert, but also one of the most skilled and experienced Cardio-Oncology specialists in Europe and the world.

You gave to our field a great contribution and without your hard efforts we would still be searching for the answers which your research provided.

After the adventure of the first Position Paper on Cardio-Oncology of the European Society of Cardiology in 2016 you were also involved from the beginning in the initiation and development of the Council of Cardio-Oncology, and you were always enthusiastic and supportive. Maurizio, you contributed from the beginning to our activities with essential suggestions and with your strong support.

You catalysed the collaboration between EACVI and the new Cardio-Oncology Council, enabling two joint sessions about Imaging in Cardio-Oncology at the EACVI Congresses 2018 and 2019. This allowed the EACVI delegates to gain in-depth knowledge on this topic.

Maurizio, you were also in charge of the Task Force of the Council for Communication. Thanks to you, we have a wonderful Newsletter, Website and Facebook page, followed by hundreds of people.

All of us are remembering you in the beautiful inaugural picture of the first meeting of the Council in Munich.

Thank you, Maurizio, for your help, your collaboration, your research and above all for your friendship. You will always inspire us!

The big family of the Council of Cardio-Oncology is in tears and sorrow, and we all feel a terrible sense of emptiness with the huge gap that you have left, but we hope you now are doing well.

See you at the next Congress in Heaven.

Ciao Gentle Giant, Maurizio.

Sincerely, your family of the Council of Cardio-Oncology friends
