Consensus Document of the ESC Council on Stroke and the ESC Cardiovascular round table

On behalf of the ESC cardiovascular round table – a strategic platform of the ESC to advance general health care strategies – the Council on Stroke organised in 2018 a two-day workshop on stroke as an interdisciplinary challenge. Together with Experts from ESO and other specialties involved in stroke care and experts from industry and regulatory bodies, the workshop presented now a consensus document on the current and emerging strategies for comprehensive stroke management concepts.

The paper encompasses as well current evidence gaps and needs for further clinical and basic research into stroke topics including prevention, diagnostic and acute treatment strategies, secondary prevention strategies and requirements for integrated health care systems and networks.

The consensus document underscores the need for further efforts to advance interdisciplinary cooperation and dialogue across medical specialties to develop truly patient-oriented holistic stroke care concepts.
