Features for Chairpersons

Chairperson Interface - A dedicated computer is installed in the lecture room at the Chairperson table and aims to enhance visibility on the ongoing session and assist in the management of the session as well as collect evaluation and comments at the end of the session - Test this service on the Practice Stage in the SSC; the hostess in the lecture room will be available to assist you to use the Chairperson Interface.

Session Introduction - An automated session presentation show is created to introduce the session to the audience. It includes presentation of the Chairpersons and information related to the session such as topic, track, and special features are being explained (voting / Ask a question).
Chairpersons will be asked to launch the introducation show via the Chairperson Interface at the start of the session.

Chairpersons Guidelines

Chairpersons should ensure the smooth progress of the session, time management as well as encouraging discussions and interactions between faculty members and the audience by allowing sufficient time for questions from the audience.

We recommend that all chairpersons liaise with the speakers presenting in their session as early as possible, preferably prior to the congress.


  • Must be available for the entire duration of the session
  • Moderate the session and organise discussions
  • Deliver concluding remarks
  • Lead session briefings (if applicable, an invitation and instructions will be sent)
  • In order to contact the speakers involved in your session, email the scientific programme department
  • If you are chairing an Abstract Session, as of May (when abstracts results are available) you can consult the abstracts via your agreement form (click on the session title , then on "view" next to the abstract title) or via ESC365/Scientific Programme Online and the Mobile App one week before the congress
  • To view the presentations, you can do so in the lecture room on the Chairperson Interface before the start of your session
  • Complete the evaluation at the end of the session on the Chairperson Interface

Discussant Guidelines

Please refer to your agreement form for confirmation of the presentation title, date, time of the session and specific instructions with regards to that session. Discussants must:

  • Be available for the entire duration of the session
  • Sit on stage next to the chairpersons
  • Intervene in the discussions, challenge the presenters and animate discussions with the audience as moderated by the chairpersons
  • Attend the session briefing (if applicable, an invitation and instructions will be sent)

Special Sessions Instructions

Session Briefing

In order to comply with the specific content and technology requirements of some sessions (Mobile App Voting functionality), session briefings will be organised.

The briefing room is located in Speaker Service Centre.

This is the opportunity for chairpersons and discussants to familiarise themselves with the cases to be presented and coordinate the discussions which should ensue during the dedicated discussion time in the session. An email with instructions and schedule will be sent to the faculty involved in the session.

Special Session Instructions

If you are involved in a special format session, please consult the session instructions shown in your 'Agreement form' which details specific information for the session. Additional information will be communicated by email.

Mobile App Voting

If your session features VOTING functionality , the faculty will receive instructions to include 'Question to the Audience' in their presentation OR a specific question to the audience has already been added that is launched by the Chairpersons or the Mobile App Moderator (Hot Line).

The Voting functionality will be explained to the audience in the Session Introduction show. Chairpersons should encourage the audience to participate in the votes and can participate themselves via their own mobile device.

Faculty Facilities

Speaker Service Centre

A faculty lounge will allow you to relax, meet with colleagues and discuss your presentations. Desk and power plugs are also available if you need to finalise your presentation before uploading.

The Practice Stage: we have recreated a lecture room stage for you to test out the Chairperson Interface which you will use for the management of your session.

Photo Booth:  upon arrival at the SSC, your badge will be scanned by the hostess.

  • If you have uploaded your picture in your Profile, you will be asked to give mandatory consents for its use (unless already done so in your Profile) 
  • If we have no picture in file for you, you will be directed to the Photo Booth, where a professional photo will be taken and if you wish, automatically added to your Profile

You will also have the option to take a new picture at the Photo booth.

In order to give you more visibility, we propose that you update your Profile. Your information will be available in connection with your presentation(s).

Please access or re-access your Profile, as some mandatory consents have been added to allow us to display the information you shared.

It is important to remind the audience that the presentations given in the sessions will be available on ESC 365 within a few hours of the session.
ESC 365 has been recently upgraded with improved features and search functionality.

Be active on Twitter

Share the science and add your voice to the biggest CV conversation on Twitter!

  • Use #heartfailure2020
  • For tweets you deem pertinent for ESC to retweet, tag @escardio
  • Tweet about the major breakthroughs/conclusions/highlights, and with the most relevant images from the speaker
  • Avoid promotional posts ie 'session xyz starting now’ or content that does not give any scientific value ie 'Great talk from @abc…’ without adding her/his key messages, points etc
  • Quote the speaker, or tag their Twitter profile
  • Double check spelling and grammar
  • If you have a concern/complaint, please don’t use social media to raise it. Talk to a member a staff. We are always at your service
  • Won’t have time to tweet? You can still retweet (RT) @escardio , @ESC_Journals or your network’s tweets; stay engaged and comment to their tweets with your view, or RT with comment (quote)
  • Apply same ethics and etiquette you would in any other context

Video / Audio / Photos

The recording of video or audio during any session of ESC Congress is strictly prohibited. 

It is the responsibility of each presenter or speaker to notify the audience of any restrictions on the photography of the content they are presenting.  
Such an announcement must be made at the beginning of the presentation.
