Research is one of the ESC's strategic focus area.
The ESC can facilitate research throughout Europe by connecting researchers with funders. It can also mobilise research funds for cardiovascular disease by working with European funding mechanisms.
The ESC helps bring your ideas to life...
The Research Funding Area, located in the ESC Plaza at ESC Congress, will allow delegates to:
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is the UK’s largest independent funder of cardiovascular research. For almost 60 years, the BHF has pioneered life-saving research that has helped halve the number of deaths from heart and circulatory disease in the UK. The BHF also helps provide vital support and care for the 7million people in the UK living with cardiovascular disease, along with information to help others reduce their risk and improve their heart health.
The European Research Council (ERC) is an EU funding agency run by scientists for scientists and offers individual funding to both young and more established researchers. The agency presently receives its funding from the actual EU funding instrument Horizon 2020. Their main focus is on “frontier research” or basic science research that pushes the boundaries of current science and technology. The only criterion for receiving grants is scientific excellence.
European Research Area Network on Cardiovascular Diseases (ERA-CVD) is a Horizon 2020-funded network (ERA-NET) focusing on CVD research to promote the European Research Area (ERA). It aims to coordinate national programmes for CVD translational research and includes 24 international partners from 19 countries. ERA-CVD provides a platform to implement Joint Transnational Calls (JTC) to fund excellent and innovative research consortium. For the first two JTC (2016 and 2017) altogether 24 consortia are funded with around 22 M€ for three years. Furthermore, ERA-CVD provides practical information on upcoming calls and support tools to facilitate partnership building in writing and submitting transnational proposals. ERA-CVD also supports young researchers' outstanding scientific publications through its Excellent Paper in Cardiovascular Research Award (EPAC).

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over seven years (2014 to 2020). It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.By coupling research and innovation, Horizon 2020 is helping to achieve this with its emphasis on excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges. The goal is to ensure Europe produces world-class science, removes barriers to innovation and makes it easier for the public and private sectors to work together in delivering innovation.
