Europe needs reliable data on cardiovascular (CV) disease and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) is the body which should provide such data. Surveys and Registries (S/R) are essential to assess CV epidemiology, diagnostic/therapeutic processes and adherence to Guidelines.
In 2009 the EURObservational Research Programme (EORP) was launched. The aim of this new programme, of Surveys & Registries, is to provide a better understanding of medical practice based on observational data collected with more robust methodological procedures. The main features of the EurObservational Research Programme are:
- Use of appropriate methodological procedures
- Network of volunteer centres appointed by ESC constituent bodies
- Use on-line electronic CRF allowing user friendly web based data entry
- Full involvement of the ESC National Societies and relevant ESC Constituent Bodies

| What’s new in Atrial Fibrillation Ablation Long-term Registry The period of enrolment has been extended for the Atrial Fibrillation Ablation Long-term Registry to two months, until December 2012. The main objective of this sentinel registry is to describe the clinical epidemiology of patients undergoing an Atrial Fibrillation Ablation (AFA) procedure, and the diagnostic/ therapeutic processes (including technical aspects, ways to measure the success of the procedure and acute and chronic outcomes/ complications of the procedure) applied in these patients.

The new programme includes:
Clinical Cardiology surveys/registries:
General to assess the management of diseases of major impact in terms of incidence. These surveys will provide epidemiological data and provide reports on the application of clinical practice guidelines recommendations (Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation General, Angina)
Sentinel to assess the impact of interventional procedures and imaging techniques (Atrial Fibrillation Ablation, TransCatheter Valve Treatment pilot)
Special to assess epidemiology and management of rarer conditions as arising critical issues in terms of public health (severity of the disease, stringent clinical needs, costs) (Pregnancy & Heart Disease, Cardiomyopathies)
Prevention surveys/registries:
Prevention to assess cardiovascular risk factors epidemiology and prevention measures (EUROASPIRE IV)
