ESC supports European Commission's proposed Tobacco Products Directive

The ESC releases position paper on the European Commission's proposal for a directive on “the manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco and related products”. Smoking is responsible for 25% of all avoidable deaths in smokers due to diseases of the heart and circulatory system or cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

Demanding physical work associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease

Additional physical activity during leisure time in those who are already physically exhausted from their daily occupation does not induce a 'training' effect but rather an overloading effect on the cardiovascular system. Two studies presented suggest that demanding physical work has a detrimental effect on an individual's risk of coronary heart disease.  Read more 

Long-term exposure to fine particles of traffic pollution associated with increased risk of heart disease

Fine particle matter and traffic noise are believed to act through similar biologic pathways, thereby increasing cardiovascular risk; they both cause an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system, which feeds into the complex mechanisms regulating blood pressure, blood lipids, glucose level, clotting and viscosity.  Read more
