Welcome Address

EUROECHO is the flagship activity of the European Association of Echocardiography and has become the largest scientific gathering on Echocardiography in the world. Its developments continue relentlessly with increasing competition among vendors with new technologies such as contrast, real-time three-dimensional echocardiography and deformation imaging that set new challenges amongst increased competition from other imaging modalities. Echocardiography remains and will remain the most popular and clinically important imaging modality, the success of which, is based upon the clinical applications of state-of-the-art Echocardiography. I wish to warmly welcome you to EUROECHO 2008, the 12th consecutive EUROECHO meeting in Lyon, France, from 10th-13th December 2008.

As every year, there will be two main special themes at EUROECHO 2008 in which four sessions in one day will be devoted to stress echocardiography and another four sessions on the role of echocardiography in Heart Failure, jointly organised with the Heart Failure Association. There will be digital interactive cases (DICE) organised by colleagues from a number of countries and other societies. New this year is the Imaging Campus where manufacturers and researchers around the world will be demonstrating new software developments and application programmes. There will be ample time for interaction with clinical tutors in small groups. Didactic masterclasses of echocardiography in small animals and clinical-pathological demonstrations on specific conditions will also take place.

The academic standards and scope of research presentations and discussions at EUROECHO 2008 will be higher than ever with almost 1300 submitted abstracts of ever increasing quality. Finally, there will be a large industry exhibition and a significant number of satellite symposia.

I wish to personally welcome you to Lyon this year and hope that you will also have the opportunity to sample the unique architecture, ambience and hospitality of this wonderful city.

Professor Petros Nihoyannopoulos
EAE President
