Heart rate may predict survival and brain function in comatose cardiac arrest survivors

Study  presented at Acute Cardiovascular Care 2014 by Dr Jakob Hartvig Thomsen from Denmark finds patients with sinus bradycardia during therapeutic hypothermia had a 50-60% lower mortality rate at 180 days than those with no sinus bradycardia. They also found that sinus bradycardia was directly associated with a better neurological status 180 days after the arrest.

Vitamin D deficiency increases poor brain function after cardiac arrest by seven-fold

According to research presented at Acute Cardiovascular Care 2014 by Dr Jin Wi from Korea, patients with vitamin D deficiency were more likely to have a poor neurological outcome or die after sudden cardiac arrest than those who were not deficient. “In patients resuscitated after sudden cardiac arrest, recovery of neurological function is very important, as well as survival....”

Women more likely to develop anxiety and depression after heart attack

According to research presented at Acute Cardiovascular Care 2014 by Professor Pranas Serpytis from Lithuania: “The World Health Organization predicts that by 2020 depression will be the second leading cause of disability and mortality in the world, surpassed only by ischaemic heart disease. Major depression follows MI in approximately 18% of cases and is an important predictor of disability and poor quality of life in the year post-MI.”
