The World Congress of Cardiology 2006 was a joint meeting of the European Society of Cardiology and the World Heart Federation held in Barcelona (SP) from 2-5 September 2006.

2 – Hot Line I

Three important heart failure studies were presented in the Hot Line I session during the World Cardiology Congress : the PEP-CHF trial (Perindopril in Elderly with Chronic Failure), the ACCLAIM study (Advanced Chronic Heart Failure Clinical Assessment of Immune Modulation Therapy) and the HHH (Home or Hospital in Heart Failure Trial).

4 - Ageing and Cardiovascular Disease

ESC and WHF selected « Cardiovascular Disease and Ageing » as the main scientific theme for this edition of the World Congress of Cardiology in Barcelona ; three presentations illustrate the need for specific action.

5 – New ESC Practice Guidelines

2006 is an important year for ESC Guidelines with the publication of important new clinical recommendations. In addition, the new Euro Heart Survey registries provide clinicians with the opportunity to participate in quality assurance programmes.

6 – Coronary Disease

The long term safety of drug eluting stents was the focus of much discussion with the presentation of a controversial meta-analysis. The Viami (Viability guided Angioplasty after Acute Myocardial Infarction) trial and the Extract-Timi 25 were 2 important trials also reported during the WCC.

7 – Hot Line II and Update Sessions

From the secondary prevention of stroke (the SPARCL trial), to antithrombotic treatment in peripheral arterial disease (the WAVE study) to hypertension treatment (ASCOT-BPLA) and ACE inhibition in coronary disease.

8 – Cardiovascular Risk Management

Strong evidence for the effectiveness of a nurse led prevention programme was demonstrated by the EuroAction study; heart rhythm and abdominal obesity as simple and efficient clinical tools for risk measurement and pharmacological intervention.
