"Parvovirus B19 persists in normal and diseased hearts, but reactivates in failing hearts"
R.Dennert - University Hospital Maastricht , NL
"Viral heart disease may be a devastating disease often affecting young adults still in the prime of their life`s. My PhD work is to gain further insight into this disease, produce a better diagnostic capacity and, ultimately, provide novel therapeutic stategies for these patients. It was a great honor to be able to present my research at the Philip Poole-Wilson Young Investigator Award in clinical research where it acknowledged by expert peers as important in the field of clinical heart failure. Being awarded the runner-up has strengthened my ambition to further pursue a research career in this field."

"microRNA-199 plays a key role in cardiac muscle growth and atrophy"
Dr. Arash Haghikia, MD - Hannover Medical School – Hannover DE
"In view of the numerous scientific sessions on latest advances in clinical heart failure research as well as in basic cardiovascular science, the HFA Meeting provides a great opportunity with enormous educational value for me as a young clinician with further interest in basic cardiovascular science to gather new insides and interchange ideas on current research activities. I`m very pleased having accepted my abstract for this year`s meeting and truly honoured having received the Runner Up Prize of the Helmut Drexler Young Investigator Award for Basic Science. In this regard, I`m already very excited and looking forward for the next year`s meeting in Gothenburg“.

Ida Gjervold Lunde - Institute for Experimental Medical Research, Oslo University Hospital, Ullevaal, Oslo, Norway
"I chose to attend the HFA congress in Berlin 2010 because my research concerns experimental heart failure and as I have attended the meeting before, I knew I would appreciate the scientific programme as well as the atmosphere. My main interests concerning the HFA congress is basic science in heart physiology and heart failure, but of course also the clinical aspects. I really look foreward to the 2011 HFA congress in Gothenburg".

"Predictors of uncertainty in caregivers of patients with heart failure- A longitudinal study"
Nursing Investigator Award - WINNER -Karen Harkness RN CCN(C) PhD - McMaster University, CAN
Over the past few years, I have heard and read about exciting nurse-lead research involving heart failure populations from members of the European Society of Cardiology. Attending the HFA meeting provided me with the opportunity to learn about such research first hand, while also providing the opportunity to network with nurse scientists who have similar research interests as myself. I am very excited about the beginning international partnerships for future nurse-lead research between the HFA community and Canada that arose from attending the congress this year and look forward to solidifying such relationships with future innovative research endeavours.
