The relationship between hospital specialists and community generalists is crucial for better cardiovascular health of populations. Primary care is the essential environment where disease risk or early disease presents and where strategies for disease prevention are most needed. Even for patients with established disease, much of routine follow up, advice on maintenance of better lifestyles, and better adherence to management are all roles which mainly fall to primary care. The ESC is committed to working more closely with primary care to optimize healthier patients in Europe and welcomes comments from generalists as to how the Society might best achieve worthwhile links.
Created following approval by the ESC General Assembly in September 2007 the Council on Cardiovascular Primary Care will be composed of groups focusing on Prevention and on Patients from both within and outside the ESC.
