Goran KrstacicThe ESC Working Group on e-Cardiology covers multidisciplinary areas of electronic and information technology applications in cardiovascular practice and research.

The scope of the Working Group on e-Cardiology encompasses the wide area of specialized computer methods in cardiovascular image processing, computational knowledge discovery, artificial intelligence, intelligent data analysis, bio-signal processing, signal modelling, databases, intra- and inter-hospital communication, e-health and mobile applications, and predictive models development.

The Working Group provides the perfect infrastructure for scientists from various fields to interact on new topics and new applications of information technology in cardiology.

The Working Group develops or contributes to standards in these areas and aims at providing a professional communication platform between clinicians, engineers and information technology specialists.

The Working Group welcomes suggestions for support and scientific endorsement of consensus documents, standardization reviews, focused seminars and meetings, professional collaboration and exchange programmes.

Assist. Prof. Goran KRSTACIC, FESC

Chairperson 2014-2016

Aim and Activities

The objective of the Working Group is to promote the use of information technology (IT) as widely as possible within the field of Cardiology. This includes the application of IT in research and routine clinical practice, both inside and outside the hospital environment.

Scope of Working Group activities

The scope of the Working Group encompasses a wide area of specialised computer methods in cardiovascular image processing (such as quantitative coronary angiography, intravascular ultrasound, echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear cardiology, etc.) and biosignal processing (such as automatic ECG analysis, arrhythmia detection, etc.). Members of the Working Group are also actively involved in many other fields such as the application of neural networks to cardiovascular diagnosis, telemedicine, computerized databases, e-health and mobile apps for clinical utilization.

The interdisciplinary nature of this Working Group, where cardiologists, engineers and scientists can discuss up-to-date technological applications and clinical research from different points of view, represents the added value of our action.

In this sense, the e-Cardiology Working Group carries on activities that could be considered as a service to other ESC Working Groups and the ESC community in general.

Organisation of sessions at the ESC Annual Congress

Every year, members of the Working Group can propose a number of symposia or clinical seminars for consideration for the ESC Annual Congress. In addition, oral and poster sessions are organised.

Collaboration with Computing in Cardiology

The Working Group on e-Cardiology is closely linked with the Computing in Cardiology (CinC) organization, which manages the annual Computing in Cardiology meeting. The Chairman of the Working Group is an ex-officio member of the Computing in Cardiology Board and participates in the abstract selection process. From 2014, the President of CinC has also become an ex-officio member of the Working Group on e-Cardiology nucleus.

Collaboration with EHRA

The Working Group has established a successful and productive collaboration with the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), including contributions to the EHRA meeting by proposing sessions and symposia. Among others, the Working Group has a permanent representative at the Board of EHRA and in the Editorial Board of EP Europace — The European Journal of Pacing, Arrhythmias and Cardiac Electrophysiology, which is an official journal of the Working Group.

Collaboration with EACVI

The Working Group has established a successful and productive collaboration with the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), including contributions to the Euroecho - Imaging meeting by proposing sessions and symposiums, and discounted fees for non-cardiologists members of our WG. Moreover, the Working Group has a permanent representative in the Editorial Board of the European Heart Journal - Cardiovascular Imaging

Meeting endorsement

The Working Group is open to give its endorsement to non-ESC meetings that can be considered of interest for its community. Expression of interest to receive this endorsement is welcome.
