ESC Congress 2013: What’s in it for the Media?

The congress will take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 31 August to 4 September, and as ever promises journalists a rich source of front-page news and feature background.  The spotlight of this year's event is “The Heart Interacting with Systemic Organs”, reflecting an interaction which, says Professor Keith Fox, Chairman of the Congress Programme Committee, will encourage critical discussion of new research and techniques with other organ experts and their transfer into clinical medicine.  Read more 

2013 ESH/ESC Guidelines for the management of arterial hypertension

Landmark clinical Guidelines introduced at ESH conference in Milan: Lifestyle factors, lack of awareness by both patients and physicians, hesitancy in initiating and intensifying drug treatment, and healthcare structural deficiencies are amongst the reasons for the increasing problem of high blood pressure in Europe, according to new joint Guidelines issued by the ESH and ESC.  Read more  Access the Guidelines

Long-distance cross-country skiers at increased risk of heart rhythm disturbances
Cross-country skiers who take part in one of the world’s most challenging ski races, the 90 km Vasaloppet in Sweden, are at increased risk of developing arrhythmia – problems with the rate or rhythm of their heart beat – according to a study of nearly 53,000 race participants published online in the European Heart Journal.  Read more
Alzheimer’s disease drugs linked to reduced risk of heart attacks

Drugs used for treating Alzheimer’s in its early stages are linked to a reduced risk of heart attacks and death, according to a large study of over 7,000 people with the disease in Sweden published online in the EHJ.

The study looked at cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs), such as donepezil, rivastigmine and galantamine, which are used for treating mild to moderate Alzheimer's.  Read more

Levosimendan improves event free survival by 50% in end-stage heart failure, Third generation MRA shows improved potassium and kidney tolerance in heart failure patients with CKD
Ambulatory levosimendan improves event free survival by 50% compared to placebo, according to results from the LevoRep study.  In a second study, the third generation mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) BAY 94-8862 showed improved potassium and kidney tolerance in heart failure patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).  Read more
