ESC Working Group on Atherosclerosis & Vascular Biology

Dear Members of the ESC Working Group on Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology,

Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, we hope you are well and that the summer season is allowing you to relax.

The ESC Congress 2021 – The Digital Experience – will be held online on August 27-30, providing an excellent opportunity for our community to connect. Thanks to the outstanding work of the organizers, the ESC congress will feature a wealth of exciting conferences. The nucleus members of our working group collaborated to select the five most relevant sessions for vascular biology and atherosclerosis. We hope you will enjoy these presentations, which have been carefully picked for you!!

In the previous issue of the newsletter, we were honored to have Prof. Peter Libby’s (Brigham and Women’s Hospital & Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA) comment on his recent key review published in Nature on "The changing nature of atherosclerosis". We are delighted to announce that, on behalf of our working group, his commentary has also been published as a Cardiopulse article in the prestigious European Heart Journal.

In this issue of the Newsletter, Paul Evans (University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK), who chaired our Working Group from 2016 to 2018 and is currently the secretary of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science (CBCS), comments on the excellent review “The year in basic vascular biology research”. This article summarizes the major findings in vascular biology published in the previous year. In addition, we share with our members recommended readings, all of which offer fascinating new findings in the field of vascular biology.

In order to comply with the data protection regulations, we would like to draw your attention to a change in the membership model from a lifetime to an annual model (that can be renewed automatically and remains free of charge). Please do not hesitate to invite your colleagues to join our Working Group and apply for membership. You are the heartbeat of our community. It is thanks to your efforts and dedication that our Working Group is able to raise awareness about the importance of cutting-edge vascular biology research and its applications to enhance patient outcomes.

On behalf of the Nucleus Members of the Working Group on Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology, we wish you a wonderful ESC congress.

Marie-Luce Piallat, WG Chair

Konstantinos Stellos, WG Communication Coordinator
