What to expect

You will work in one of the largest Heart and Vascular Centers in Germany with access to large and deeply phenotyped data sets within a stimulating, innovative and powerful environment for modern biomedical research and academic artificial intelligence (AI).

The professorship is located in the University Center for Cardiovascular Sciences (UCCS) with a secondary appointment at the Center for Biomedical AI of the UKE (bAIome). The UCCS, which is currently being founded, is a research institute in the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg dedicated to interdisciplinary translational cardiovascular research. UCCS integrates into the existing structures of experimental and clinical cardiovascular research and enhances the translational capacity for cardiovascular research at The University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). It offers access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and excellent cooperation opportunities on campus. The bAIome, which is currently under construction, develops AI algorithms for biomedical applications (baiome.org). The bAIome hosts two Nvidia DGX-1 servers and one Nvidia DGX-A100 server. These can be used by the successful applicant.

Responsibilities:

The professorship includes leading a research group that develops methods of AI and bioinformatics and uses them to analyze complex biomedical data in the field of life sciences with a focus on cardiovascular topics.
Application and development of innovative methods for the analysis of translational and clinical biomedical datasets in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of preclinical, clinical and AI researchers.
Close cooperation with the local structures of the cardiovascular sciences and access to their extensive data sets, i.a. at the UHZ, the UCCS, the Hamburg City Health Study or the Center for Experimental Medicine
Establishment of an internationally visible profile in AI, bioinformatics and cardiovascular research
Establishment of international scientific collaborations and projects on o.a. area
Participation in the development of the region to a top location for cardiovascular research, initiated by Hamburg’s scientific institutions
Representation of the topic of cardiovascular AI in research and teaching at the UKE
Participation in a biomedical AI programme
Teaching obligation

The teaching obligations are based on the teaching obligation regulation for Hamburg’s universities (Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung für die Hamburger Hochschulen (LVVO)).



Appointment requirements:

§ 15 Hamburg University Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz) of 18 July 2001 in the currently valid version
Proof of habilitation or equivalent scientific achievements
Internationally recognized research achievements in cardiovascular AI or related fields
In-depth experience in content and methodology in at least one of the following areas: Text and Data Mining, signal processing (e.g. ECG), Deep Neural Networks
Experience in the acquisition of third-party funds and implementation of third-party funded projects, both with public sponsors and with industrial partners
Cooperation and leadership skills and the willingness to engage in academic self-administration
Experience in interdisciplinary research projects and in interfaculty teams
Interest in the (further) development of AI training formats
