OUR MISSION: TO REDUCE THE BURDEN OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
The Forum of Young Cardiologists ("Fórum Mladých Kardiológov") – FMK is the youngest working group of the Slovak Society of Cardiology (SSC). It was established in 2010 and joined the Cardiologists of Tomorrow (CoT) initiative created by European Society of Cardiology (ESC) (1) The FMK has currently approximately 50 members and five-membered committee. The primary aim of the FMK is to support educational and research activities of young doctors (under 36 years) interested in cardiovascular medicine.
On the 12-13 April 2013 in Trnava - Slovakia, the second edition of a 2 days educational meeting organised by FMK took place (first edition was on the 11-12 March 2011 (2), in Trnava as well). It is the major event of this working group with the same name – Forum of young cardiologists. This year, there were around 140 participants registered and 50 scientific works presented in about 12 hours. In total, 25 educational reviews were dedicated to topics such as syncope, arrhythmias, chest pain and acute coronary syndromes as well as heart failure and cardiovascular imaging. Lecture focused on cardiology statistics showed young doctors how to interpret the results of clinical trials. "Fabian´s lecture" – in memorial of Prof. Juraj Fabián – was dedicated to heart replacement. This meeting is unique in terms of giving an opportunity to young doctors to get the first experience of the presentation of their results. There were 12 case reports with themes like heart failure, sudden cardiac death, antitrombotic therapy, acute coronary syndromes, cardiac tumors or other diseases affecting cardiovascular system. Additionally, 13 posters (all in English) were presented by young cardiologists. Abstracts (25, in total) were publicated in Cardiology Letters, official SSC journal (3). The best poster and case-reports were rewarded by prizes in value approximately € 300 each. Besides that, congress participants could practise temporary pacemaker insertion on a simulator device. The faculty of the event was international – special guest Prof. Lino Gonçalves, FESC (see picture) from Portugal presented the work of the ESC e-Learning platform. Speakers were also from Czech Republic (CR) – members of the Kardio 35 (CoT organisation in CR). This made, together with Slovak speakers and participants from the whole country, a heterogeneous group with good potential for next national and international cooperation (4).We strongly believe that the 3rd edition of the Forum of young cardiologists conference – again with the international faculty – will take place in two years. We also work on more effective FMK, which is going to be even better partner within SSC and ESC (5).
