In Memoriam Alan Howard

Former Chief Executive Officer of the European Society of Cardiology

HOWARD-Alan-portrait.jpgIt is with deep sadness that the European Society of Cardiology marks the passing of Alan Howard, former ESC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), whose leadership significantly contributed to shaping the modern ESC.

Alan Howard was appointed CEO of the ESC in 1998, during a time of rapid growth and transformation for the society. Before taking the helm as CEO, Alan had already made a significant contribution to the ESC in his role as legal advisor. Notably, he was closely involved in the early stages of the European Heart House in Sophia Antipolis in early 1990 – an ambitious project that would become the central hub for ESC operations and education.

As CEO, Alan played a pivotal role in professionalising the Society’s operations and guiding its structural evolution. He was instrumental in adapting ESC governance to meet the demands of an expanding, increasingly complex organisation, enabling it to better serve its members and partners across Europe and beyond. His tenure brought the consolidation of key activities, the strengthening of international collaboration, and a shift towards broader policy engagement.

Those who worked alongside Alan remember him not only for his administrative excellence but also for his calm demeanour, sound judgement, and unwavering commitment to the ESC’s mission. He understood the importance of continuity and collaboration and worked to build strong bridges between past achievements and future aspirations. Alan Howard’s legacy lives on in the institutional strength and global reputation of the ESC today. His contributions have left an enduring mark on the Society.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Edith, and to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working with him. He will be remembered with deep respect and sincere gratitude.
