Postgraduate Course in Heart Failure

Joint collaboration between the European Heart Academy of ESC, Heart Failure Association, Zurich Heart House, University of Zurich and Zurich University Hospital

The increasingly complex demands of treating heart failure patients call for a new kind of physician, a heart failure specialist. Postgraduate Course in Heart Failure (PCHF) offers interactive sessions between speakers and participants, workshops, rapid fire sessions, live case seminars and ward visits. The course leads to a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Heart Failure delivered by the University of Zurich and is endorsed by the European Heart Academy of the ESC.

Programme start date: January 2018

Application deadline: 15 September 2017

Programme Overview

Widely considered the new epidemic of the 21st century, heart failure is a leading cause of hospitalization in patients over 65 years of age. The increasingly complex demands of treating such patients calls for a new kind of physician, i.e. a cardiologist who is not only competent in clinical medicine and pharmacotherapy, but is also skilled in cardiac devices and their programming. This specialist must also be highly knowledgeable in imaging modalities and procedures of the coronary circulation and valvular apparatus, and similarly qualified in the management of patients with end-stage heart failure.

To address this largely still unmet educational need, the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the ESC and the European Heart Academy – in collaboration with the Zurich Heart House – developed a novel postgraduate course in heart failure (PCHF).

Structure and content

PCHF consists of a two-year programme with eight modules of 2,5 days each, a total of 160 hours lectures and 140 hours of self-study. Each module is chaired by an internationally recognized expert. Lectures offer interactive discussions between speakers and participants, practical sessions and life case seminars. The course is based on a practice oriented structure where participants can improve their clinical skills in diagnostic and increase their therapeutic knowledge.

The programme is based on the currently published core curriculum of the ESC HFA and its successful completion leads to a Certificate of Advanced Studies issued by the University of Zurich (CAS UZH in Heart Failure).
