Summary

The course is composed of two online sessions:

  • Thursday, 14 October 2021 from 14:00 to 18:30 CEST
  • Friday, 15 October 2021 from 14:00 to 18:30 CEST

Organised in collaboration with Cardiac Risk in the Young, this online course will allow participants to develop an understanding of the evaluation and management of athletes with suspected or confirmed heart disease. By the end of the course, participants will have a good understanding of the indications and pitfalls of different investigative modalities and the challenges that a sport physician faces when advising an athlete with heart disease given the limited evidence base.

Learning Objectives

After the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the evaluation and management of athletes with suspected or confirmed heart disease.
  • Appreciate the challenges that a sports physician faces when advising an athlete with heart disease given the limited evidence base.
  • Assess the indications and pitfalls of different investigative modalities, including 12-lead ECG, echocardiography, cardiac MRI, exercise testing, ECG monitor, CT coronary angiography.
  • Define the effects of chronic endurance exercise in the athletic heart and critically appraise the relationship between exercise and atrial fibrillation in veteran athletes.
  • Assess the significance of ventricular ectopy in athletes and evaluate athletes with malignant arrhythmias.
  • Differentiate athlete’s heart from dilated cardiomyopathy.
  • Explore the evidence on COVID-19 and how it affects the heart and advise appropriate investigations of athletes affected by the condition.
  • Appraise the 2020 ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines on sports cardiology and exercise in patients with CVD
