Elections for the ESC Council on Valvular Heart Disease

Mandate 2020-2022

The Council on Valvular Heart Disease is holding elections for the following Nucleus and Nominating Committee positions for the mandate 2020-2022.



Nucleus Positions

Treasurer/Secretary

The Treasurer/Secretary is responsible for financial affairs and budget management of the Council, according to ESC accounting principles.

He/she also supports the Chairperson in administration (annual report, Board/Nucleus communications, meeting protocols, SOPs) and attends all Nucleus and Board meetings.

The Treasurer/Secretary is elected for two years and may be re-elected for a further two years (four years maximum).

Liaison Officer

The Liaison Officer is responsible for the relationships with national and international societies devoted to valvular heart disease and specialist societies with an interest in specific aspects of VHD. The Liaison Officer is elected for two years and may be re-elected for a further two years (four years maximum).

Communications Coordinator

The Communication Coordinator collects and proposes content for the Council’s newsletter and website and any other communication media used by the Council. He/she ensures that the Council’s website is updated with new content on a regular basis to inform the public and the Council’s members (information on new techniques, scientific material, reviews of papers etc.). If a social media presence is maintained by the Council, the Communication Coordinator ensures that discussions are moderated correctly and in accordance with current ESC recommendations. The Communication Coordinator is elected for two years and may be re-elected for a further two years (four years maximum).

Ordinary Nucleus Member – two positions

Ordinary nucleus members must engage actively in the activities of the Council. The Chairperson of the Council may assign specific responsibilities to the Ordinary Nucleus Members based on their area of expertise and the ongoing Council initiatives. The Ordinary Nucleus Members are elected for two years and may be re-elected for a further two years (four years maximum).

Candidates may only apply for one position.

Nominating Committee - Three positions

 

The role of the Nominating Committee is to supervise the good running of elections following a call for candidates for open positions.

The Nominating Committee:

  • Ensures that the criteria for eligibility are pre-defined.
  • Evaluates the candidates and proposes at least one candidate per position.
  • Strives to encourage a good balance of candidates by considering the experience of the candidates, the geographical representation of ESC countries, and the gender.

What you should know

  • This Nominating Committee mandate will run from September 2020-August 2022.
  • The members of the Nominating Committee are not eligible for election into Council on Valvular Heart Disease Nucleus positions for four years after the end of their mandate in the Nominating Committee (2026).

How to apply

If you would like to be a member of the Nucleus or Nominating Committee we invite to you send an application letter and one-page curriculum vitae clearly indicating:

  • Your suitability and motivation for the role
  • Any previous experience with positions within ESC or another professional society
  • If applying for a position as a member of the Nominating Committee, that you are aware that if elected you will be ineligible for positions in the ESC Council on Valvular Heart Disease Nucleus for four years after the end of the mandate in the Nominating Committee (until 2026).
  • Candidates may only apply for one role.

Criteria for eligibility (Nucleus and Nominating Committee positions)

  • Candidates must be members of the Council on Valvular Heart Disease
  • Only Council members whose place of work is an ESC member country can be elected to Nucleus positions
  • Candidates should have a reasonable publication record in the field of Valvular Heart Disease
  • Previous experience as an official within the ESC or another national/international professional society in the field of valvular heart disease or a related area is desirable.
  • Candidates cannot hold more than three leadership ESC positions at the same time. Candidates cannot be elected to more than one ESC Council Nucleus at the same time. Candidates cannot simultaneously hold another position as an elected Nucleus Board Member in an ESC Association, Working Group or another Council, unless if co-opted in a non-voting position

 What happens next?

  1. The applications will be reviewed by the Nominating Committee of the ESC Council on Valvular Heart Disease for eligibility.
  2. The role of the Nominating Committee is also to guarantee interdisciplinary, gender and age balance and to propose a balanced list of candidates for all positions. Thus, besides applications from cardiologists, applications from other specialists (neurologists, radiologists, surgeons, strokologists etc.) and from our young members are particularly welcome.
  3. Voting is by secret ballot and the elected members take up their positions at the end of the Council Meeting at the ESC Congress 2020.
  4. Council members with voting rights are members of that same Council approved at the launch of the call for candidates, whose country of work is in an ESC Member Country.
