Dear Council Members,
With great pleasure I am writing to inform you that the ESC Board and the ESC General Assembly approved the creation of the ESC Council on Valvular Heart Disease and the dissolution of the ESC Working Group on Valvular Heart Disease.
The Council aims to be a multidisciplinary forum for the Heart Valve Team, to encourage research, knowledge exchange, teaching and other educational activities in regard with Valvular Heart Disease. This important development was the result of a Proposal, Business-Case and Council Constitution elaborated and submitted by the current Nucleus members.
The ex-Working Group members will automatically become members of the Council unless they stipulate that they wish to leave the membership.
Valvular heart disease becomes a major pathologic entity in Europe, as a result of an increase in prevalence in the continuously aging population. Advances in diagnosis and management techniques require development of specific expertise and the follow-up of the patients is performed in dedicated expert clinics. Furthermore, major decisions regarding surgical or transcatheter intervention are taken by a collaborating multidisciplinary team of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery experts in valvular heart disease – the Heart Valve Team.
To support the continuous professional development of individuals involved in the diagnosis, follow-up and management of valvular heart disease, the Nucleus of the ESC Council on Valvular Heart Disease aims to increase its educational activities and provide educational material addressing the needs of the Heart Valve Team. The Council will establish collaboration with ESC and non-ESC specialty groups in the field of Valvular Heart Disease.
The Congress endorsed by the ESC Council on Valvular Heart Disease is the EuroValve. Furthermore, the Council will organise sessions at ESC Congress, the EuroEcho Imaging and major relevant congresses and meetings.
A regular newsletter will provide the members of the Council update on developments and educational activities.
