At EuroHeartCare 2019, awards will be given for the best oral abstract in each session, with all finalists and winners benefitting from free registration to next year’s EuroHeartCare Congress. The ACNAP Clinical Excellence Award in Cardiovascular Care will also be received by a nurse or allied professional who has demonstrated exceptional practice as judged by the presentation of an unpublished clinical case. The deserved winner receives a prize of €2,000, a diploma and free registration to next year’s congress.
We asked four award winners from EuroHeartCare 2018 about their experience:
Ms. Britt Borregaard, Best Oral Abstract Award
“It meant a lot to me to be able to present my research and to have the expert judges acknowledge and appreciate the presentation and my findings. The abstract that I presented was part of my PhD where I am trying to optimise the clinical pathway after heart valve surgery. In my PhD, I’m investigating whether readmissions can be reduced by using an individualised approach. It was a surprise to win as the quality of the research by other presenters was very high and impressive. The prize has enabled me to attend EuroHeartCare again this year, where I will be presenting more results from the next part of my PhD.”
Dr. Stefanie Mentrup, Best Oral Abstract Award
“In 2016, I won a Post-doctoral Mentorship Award from ACNAP and it was this work that
led to the Best Oral Abstract Award in 2018. I presented a comprehensive qualitative synthesis about patients’ experiences of risk communication after acute myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease. This research was conducted with my mentor, Professor Felicity Astin, and colleagues from England and Germany. My mentor was in the audience at the oral session—that gave me reassurance and I also got some important feedback from her after the talk. As a nonnative English speaker, it can be challenging to give a presentation in a short time, but I would encourage others to try as everyone was understanding and supportive.”
Prof. Christopher Lee, Best Oral Abstract Award
“I was very impressed by the level of science presented by all contestants and by the engagement of participants and the audience. It was also a very warm and welcoming environment and a wonderful forum for exchange of ideas on nursing science. I presented data on a collaborative effort comparing physical heart failure symptom burden among patients from USA, Italy and Spain. We found marked differences across the countries and, after my presentation, I had some very interesting questions on why we are seeing these differences and received some valuable feedback. EuroHeartCare Congress is a really great opportunity to discuss the impact of culture and psychosocial aspects in addition to physiological determinants. We look forward to presenting continued research on this topic at EuroHeartCare and ESC Congresses.”
Ms. Marie Ryan, Award for Clinical Excellence in Cardiovascular Care
“I was delighted just to be able to present my interesting clinical case and absolutely thrilled and honoured to win. I love the idea of clinical case presentations as they really resonate with clinical practitioners like myself—it allows the patient a voice that can be heard. Big clinical studies are necessary, but the patient’s voice gets drowned out a little. Clinical trials help us to build guidelines, but it is not always easy to apply what is learned in clinical trials to individual patients in clinical practice. The essence of our work as nurses is to get our patients to believe in what we are trying to communicate to them so that they can receive guideline-based care. Clinical case presentations are often about difficulties with these communications or unusual situations that we can’t foresee—I would encourage others to submit their interesting cases too so that we can all learn from them.”
