Travel, hotel and city

Getting to the city

By Plane

Dublin is easily accessible from the UK, Continental Europe, the USA and Asia. More than 36 scheduled airlines fly into Dublin Airport, which is located 12 km from the city centre. For more information please visit www.dublinairport.com

Dublin Airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 is the arrival and departure point for airlines including Ryanair, Air France, Flybe.com, Germanwings, Iberia, Lufthansa, Norwegian and SAS. Terminal 2 is the hub for Emirates, Etihad and transatlantic flights by American Airlines, US Airways, United Airlines, Delta, Air Canada and Aer Lingus (Ireland’s national airline, whose UK and continental flights are also based in T2).

Taxis

Taxis are available from the forecourts directly outside Terminal 1 & Terminal 2. Follow Taxi signage to the designated taxi ranks. A taxi dispatcher is available at either taxi rank if you require any further information or assistance.

A taxi to the city centre costs around €25 - €35.

Buses

Several operators offer a bus service from the airport to Dublin city and tickets can be pre-booked online.

By boat

Dublin Port has several passenger ferry services to/from Wales and England. The main routes are Liverpool-Dublin and Holyhead-Dublin. Companies from Wales include Stena and Irish Ferries, and from Liverpool, P&O and Norfolk Line. Crossings from Liverpool are seven hours, while crossings from Holyhead are from 2.5 hours.

The only bus from Dublin port to the centre costs €3 and stops at Connolly and Houston stations. Be aware that there is no ATM in the port, and no facility to purchase a Leap card (for bus transport) via card, so ensure you have some Euros with you or you will be stranded in the port 4km from the nearest ATM.

By train

Dublin has two main railway stations. Heuston Station, in the west of the city centre, serves much of the west and south of the country including an hourly service to Cork which also services Limerick. Connolly Station, in the north-east centre of the city, serves the south east and east coast, Belfast, Sligo in the north-west and suburban commuter services including the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) system.

Driving

There’s really no need: you can walk or take a taxi or public transport just about anywhere you need to go. Plus, there’s virtually no free parking in the city centre.

Public transport

Dublin Bus (dublinbus.ie) runs Dublin’s comprehensive bus network.

The city’s DART (www.irishrail.ie) offers rail services along the sweep of Dublin Bay; and the light rail LUAS (www.luas.ie) runs two lines from the city centre to the southern and south-western suburbs respectively. Tickets can be bought at any station.

A range of integrated tickets is available. A Freedom ticket is a cost-effective way to get around Dublin by bus, DART, LUAS and Airlink to and from the airport: three-day tickets cost €33 and are available online and in Dublin Airport only. One-day bus/DART/LUAS tickets cost €10; weekly bus/DART/LUAS tickets cost €40.

Cycling

Dublinbikes (www.dublinbikes.ie) runs the bike-sharing scheme in the city. You can buy a three-day ticket (€5) at any of the 100+ bike docks in the central city.
