Getting to the city

Slovenia is situated in Central Europe and borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia - it is a couple of hours drive away from Venice and Vienna. Slovenia is easily accessible from all neighbouring countries, as it has good road and rail connections, with daily flights from many European cities.

By Plane

In addition to the daily flight connections across Europe, there are two low-cost flight providers flying from the main Slovenian international airport Jože Pučnik Ljubljana. They are EasyJet and Wizz Air, flying to London and Brussels. You can also fly to one of the nearby airports in the neighbouring countries, and access Slovenia from there by bus, train or rental car.

  • From the Airport by Taxi - A taxi ride from Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport to Ljubljana costs from €20.00 to €45.00. Charges are lower when taxis are ordered by phone. It is advisable to enquire about the fare before the ride. Taxis in Ljubljana can be ordered via the free mobile application Hopin Taxi.
  • From the Airport by Bus - There are several Bus and shuttle services from the airport into central Ljubljana and the surrounding area. More information is available from the Ljubljana Airport website

Ljubljana Card entitles you to unlimited free travel on city buses operated by the company Ljubljanski potniški promet (LPP).

Urban, integrated, and interurban bus services operated by the Ljubljana bus company, the LPP, also run to the nearby places such as Škofljica, Medvode, Brezovica, Iška vas, Vodice, Brnik (Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport), Polhov Gradec, Grosuplje, Vrhnika, Borovnica, Logatec, Videm/Dobrepolje, and Ivančna Gorica.

By Car

It is easy to travel in Slovenia by car; the roads are well maintained and clearly signposted. To drive on the motorways it is mandatory to have a vignette, these can be purchased on a yearly or weekly basis.

By Train

Slovenia has a developed network of railways, connecting Ljubljana with Graz and Klagenfurt (Austria) to the north and Trieste (Italy) to the west. Ljubljana's main train station, simply called "Ljubljana", is within an easy walk to the city centre. The web site of Slovenian Railways (Slovenske Zeleznice) displays train schedules.

By Bus

The web site of the Ljubljana Bus station (Avtobusna postaja Ljubljana) offers timetables for all local bus connections, including the plan of the bus routes. For most of the routes you can buy the tickets directly from the driver. Please have small denomination Euro notes and coins ready.

By Taxi

In the centre of Ljubljana you can easily find a vacant taxi. Charges range between €0.80 and €1.50 for the starting fee and from €0.70 to €1.70 per kilometre.Taxis in Ljubljana can be ordered via the free mobile application Hopin Taxi.

By Bike

The BicikeLJ bicycle-sharing system gives you an opportunity to hire bikes from self-service terminals located across the wider Ljubljana city centre. BicikeLJ bikes are particularly suitable for shorter, up to an hour-long rides as hire is free if you return a hired bicycle to the nearest docking station within an hour and wait for five minutes before hiring a new one.

The use of the BicikeLJ system is practically free of charge. The only cost involved is the symbolic fee for compulsory online registration with the system, which stands at €1.00 for a week and €3.00 for a year and must be completed in advance of hiring.
