Founding Fathers of the ESC - What Have They Become - Part III - Sweden

Focus on the Swedish Society of Cardiology

The Swedish Society of Cardiology, created in 1947 and a member of the ESC since 1950,  accounts for 1,150 members whereof roughly 700 are active cardiologists.

The ESC Membership & Communications Division got a hold of Per Tornvall, MD, PhD, FESC, the President of the Swedish Society of Cardiology:

"The main aims of our Society are to organise training and support research in the cardiovascular field. The Society, which belongs to the Swedish Society of Medicine, is a well respected organisation celebrating its 60th anniversary this year so we have been around for a while!

In terms of activities, we have an official journal in Swedish language, “Svensk Cardiologi” issuing four editions per annum, and we organise the Swedish Cardiovascular Spring Meeting together with other Societies in the field of cardiovascular health. We also organise an annual update meeting for our members. The Spring meeting / Annual meeting in 2008 will be held 23-25 April in Malmö.

Other important fields of interest are education amongst the cardiology community and conducting examinations of new specialists.

Once a year, one of the Swedish University Hospitals host an examination usually sat by five to 15 young cardiologists, who are examined in both a written and a practical, case-based part.

Recently, we have been more active in promoting cardiovascular health in general and not just amongst the profession. Concretely, we started cooperating with the Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation and the patient organisation to further improve cardiovascular health.

In my view the European Heart Health Charter, developed by the ESC and the European Heart Network, with the support of the European Commission and WHO Europe, also gives us further support for the engagement in cardiovascular health in Sweden. To the best of my knowledge the percentage of smokers in Sweden is the last one on the list of European countries. However, there is still and always room for improvement and the fight against obesity and physical inactivity has just started. My personal feeling is that cardiologists can do a lot more to improve cardiovascular health by increasing their range of actions directly within the public arena."
