Communication is fundamentally important to the SEC

When asked by the ESC to reflect on our activities as part of our long-term partnership with our European partner, it dawned on us that what has been key to our success is communication.

Communication lies right at the heart of the Spanish Society of Cardiology thereafter referred to as SEC, be it through our scientific meetings, our publishing line or our educational programmes.

Our main communication platforms are the National Congress, the Revista Española de Cardiología journal and our website.

Our national congress has been an important annual event since 1944 attracting over 3,000 delegates each year. Additionally you may have heard of the ‘Revista Española de Cardiología’ which has just reached its sixtieth year and is considered to be the forefront Spanish speaking scientific medical journal with a 2.176 Impact Factor. Its success is linked to its dual language publication – both in Spanish and online in English.

Lead, reach and influence

Our organisation is organised around three major missions. The first one is to lead all actions of investigation, education, disclosure, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in Spain. The Spanish Society of Cardiology grants more than one million euros a year in terms of scholarships and awards.

Our second objective is to reach a maximum level of contribution in the International development of all these above mentioned aspects particularly within a European and Latin American frame.

Our third aim is to influence all institutions - public and private, national and international - who have the capacity to plan, execute, subsidise or sponsor actions of prevention, attendance, research, education, disclosure or distribution of cardiology resources.

With a little help from two agencies

The SEC is backed up by an Editorial Agency responsible for promoting and publishing its members’ scientific work. The Editorial catalogue is packed with books, monographs, paperbacks, online courses and much more.

We also rely on the steady support of a Research Agency whose mission is to promote and help basic and applied research in the field of cardiovascular disease. The agency also helps the Spanish Society of Cardiology to fulfil a number of essential tasks.

Spanish hospitality

The Heart House or ‘Casa del Corazón’, the SEC’s headquarters are open to all members of our organisation.  The building is based in Madrid and provides a welcoming infrastructure for our leadership, administrative staff and activities linked to the SEC.

The SEC in facts and figures

The SEC is a not-for-profit scientific and professional organisation founded in 1944. It comprises 4,102 members (cardiologists and specialists in cardiovascular diseases from around the world but more specifically from Spain, Europe and Latin America). 167 of them are ESC Fellows. The Society embraces 13 affiliated Regional Cardiology Societies and 11 Scientific Working Groups.
