Throughout the two days of the "Cardiology Today", the conference participants were able to attend sessions with world class experts. The scientific program included several lectures, five round-table discussions on heart failure, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndromes, valvular heart diseases and imaging techniques, as well as three satellite symposia. The scientific program of the meeting offered both state-of-the-art knowledge and innovative approaches in contemporary cardiovascular medicine. More than 260 physicians participated at the meeting. During the Congress there were also sessions with abstract presentations and presentations from the national working groups.
President of CSC, Dr Loizos Antoniades welcomed all invited guests and participants, during the opening ceremony, at which the main speaker was the minister of health, Dr. Christos Patsalides. In addition, Professor Fausto Pinto and Professor Panos Vardas spoke on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Thirteen distinguished guests from Europe and Israel were invited. Among them were Prof. Dalby Kristensen (ESC Vice-President), Prof. Nihoyannopoulos, Prof. Pinto, Prof. Vardas, Prof. Brugada, Prof. Eldar, Prof. Danias and Dr Manginas.
The new initiative at this year's Congress was the organisation of a Joint Session arranged between the CSC and ESC chaired by Prof. F. Pinto and Dr E. Nicolaides with the participation of ESC Vice-President Prof. S. Dalby Kristensen. The topic of this session was the Management of Acute Coronary Syndromes (STEMI, N-STEMI Management of ACS in the elderly). During this session Prof. Kristensen presented the status of management of ACS in Denmark, and Dr. Avraamides the present situation in Cyprus. After the presentations followed a productive discussion between the speakers and the audience. The media offered a strong publicity about this topic with emphasis on the potential of the health system in Cyprus to offer a 24 hour invasive approach in the management of ACS.
Another innovation during the Congress, was the joint stand of CSC and ESC, where informative material about ESC and CSC was offered. We were very happy that Mrs Isabelle Collins Head of National Societies Relations visited Cyprus, and gave us the opportunity to discusses subjects to improve the relations and communication between ESC and CSC.
